Pascha is my absolute favourite time of year. Nothing compares to it for me. What is Pascha? That’s what Easter is called in Russian. Majority of Orthodox Christians follow the Julian calendar and as a result the date of Pascha (and Christmas) is different. The world today follows the new Gregorian calendar. This year Pascha falls on the Sunday following Easter. I look forward to the celebrations, the festivities, the unique church services and the time spent with family.
In Russian tradition we bake special Easter cakes called Kulichi (or Kulich singular). These are baked in tins and they are tall cylinder shaped. I like mine with sultanas. They are a very big deal, and take a lot of time and effort to make. When I can I go to my mama’s house and help her make them. We usually start at 5am and finish baking them well into the evening. I can’t even quite describe what they taste like as there’s nothing really comparable. We only make them once a year, just before Pascha.
For Pascha we decorate a few of the Kulichi with white icing and take them to church along with eggs (dyed red) to be blessed. On them we often write X.B. which in the cyrillic alphabet are actually H and V. They stand for Hristos Voskreci or Christ is Risen! Kulichi are a real symbol of Pascha for me – and so yummy! My mouth is starting to water as I write this. Here is a photo from a few years ago of Kulichi being blessed:
The reason why I’m sharing all of the above is because I’m really excited that I was able to make a card with Kulichi on them using the Frozen Treats Framelits and the Picnic With You Bundle!
To make the kulichi in this card I used the ice-cream die from the Frozen Treats Framelits but lined the edge of the paper (Crushed Curry card stock) with the bottom of the ice-cream so that the stick wasn’t being cut out. I then used the ice-cream topping die (Whisper White card stock) from the same set for the white icing. Join them together hiding the bite mark of the ice-cream and you now have a kulich. I added them to the basket and grass from the Picnic Basket Builder Framelits. The white picnic napkin has the pattern from the stamp set white heat embossed on Whisper White Card Stock to give it some texture. You can see this more in the next two photos.
For the background I cut Soft Sky card stock and stamped the cloud image from the Sunshine & Rainbows Stamp Set. This is a favourite technique of mine at the moment to add some extra something to the background. The whole card was finished off with XB Large Letters Dies.
I’m looking forward to sending these card to my Russian Orthodox friends and family.
Thank you for visiting my blog! I hope that I’ve inspired you to be creative.
Bye for now!
